If you want to make a hanging birdhouse from natural materials, the Birdhouse Gourd is ideal in size and shape. These light green, 12 in. L to 24 in. L gourds have hourglass forms and an average diameter of 8 in. to 12 in. Harvest the gourds in the fall before frost when the shells turn hard and glossy. Let each gourd dry. Then cut a hole in the bottom portion so the birds can get in and out. Finally, remove the seeds and varnish or wax the outside. Personalize each birdhouse by decorating it with painted designs before you varnish or wax it.
